HOW IT WORKS
Swipe, post, and see
where you rank.
Um Blip is a feed of funny short videos with a scoreboard attached. You vote on clips with a swipe, post your own, and compare where you land against your friends, a private group, or a public board. Here is exactly how each part works.
1. Watching is voting
Clips arrive one at a time as a card. Swipe right if it made you laugh and left if it didn't. The card moves with your hand, stamps LIKE or NOPE, and flies away to reveal the next one, so reacting and moving on are the same gesture.
A left swipe is a genuine downvote rather than a neutral skip. Both directions count, which is what makes the question "did it land?" worth asking on every clip.
You can browse and vote without posting anything. Swiping helps score other people's clips, but it doesn't add to your own ranking — only clips you post can do that.
2. Posting a blip
Record in the app or import something from your camera roll. Either way a blip runs up to 15 seconds, add a caption, and it goes into the feed where anyone can watch and vote on it.
Posting is what puts you on the boards. Until you post a clip, you have no creator score to rank — which is the point of the whole thing.
3. How your score works
Your score is the net votes on the clips you've posted: likes minus dislikes. Follower count isn't part of it. A clip that divides the room can pull your score in either direction, and a clip nobody likes actively costs you.
4. Three kinds of board
Every board compares the same creator score. What changes is who you're being measured against.
The people you follow
An automatic ranking of you and everyone you follow. Nothing to set up — follow people and they show up.
Your own private board
Name a board and invite up to 20 people, counting invitations you've sent but that haven't been accepted yet.
A bigger room
Create a public board or search for one and join it. Anyone can find these, so the list of people to beat gets longer.
"Invite-only" describes who can see the board and its standings. It does not make your videos or your profile private — clips posted by members stay in the public feed like everyone else's.
5. The weekly race
Every board shows a weekly view and an all-time view. The weekly standings count net votes on clips posted during the current week, and the week resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC.
That means an old hit can't hold your weekly spot forever: new likes on a clip from two weeks ago don't count toward this week's race. Posting again is how you enter it. All-time standings run alongside and keep the long record, so nothing you've built up disappears when the week turns over.
Common questions
How long can a blip be?
Up to 15 seconds. That applies whether you record in the app or import an existing clip from your camera roll.
How is my score calculated?
Your score is the net votes on the clips you have posted: likes minus dislikes. A left swipe is a real downvote, not a neutral skip, so a clip can move your score in either direction. Follower count is not part of the calculation.
Does swiping earn me points?
No. Swiping helps score other people's clips, but it does not add to your own ranking. Only clips you post can move your score, so you can watch and vote as much as you like without ever posting.
Do invite-only boards make my videos private?
No. Invite-only controls who can see the board and its standings. The clips themselves stay part of the public feed, where anyone can watch and vote on them.
When do weekly rankings reset?
Every Monday at 00:00 UTC. Weekly standings count the net votes on clips posted during the current week, so new votes on an older clip do not count toward the new week. All-time standings run alongside and never reset.
How many people can join a private board?
Up to 20, including invitations that have been sent but not yet accepted. Public boards do not have that limit.
Is Um Blip free?
Yes. Um Blip is free to download on iPhone and iPad and is supported by ads. It is rated for ages 13 and up.
Think you've got a better blip?
